WEARING YOUR HEARING INSTRUMENT

It is not unusual for individuals to struggle with hearing loss for several years before taking steps to correct it. During this time the hearing system is deprived of auditory information. As a result, changes gradually occur which relate to the way in which your brain interprets sound. It will take time for your brain to learn how to use the information that your new hearing aid(s) provide.

As you begin using your hearing aids, you will hear many sounds that you have not heard in a long time. Many of the sounds that you have been hearing will sound more distinct. As the novelty wears off, you will find yourself less distracted by these new sounds and more comfortable with the new sound quality. Your ability to use this new information will improve as you find yourself better able to hear and understand speech.

Remember this learning process takes time and patience. Your hearing healthcare professional will help you develop a schedule that will faciliate this process. Although full time use may not be practical on the first day you receive your hearing aid(s), it is important to build up to full time use as soon as possible. Experience with your hearing aids will help you become accustomed to your new sound and help you participate in the fine tuning process.
