HEARING INSTRUMENT FITTING

An appropriate hearing aid(s) will be selected for you by your hearing healthcare professional.

This decision is based on many factors such as:

  • The type and severity of your hearing loss
  • The size and shape of your ears
  • The types of listening environments in which you will be using your hearing aids
  • Your personal preferences and expectations

Once a hearing aid selection has been made, the fitting process begins. The first step is to physically fit the aid(s) to your ear. Adjustments may be made to optimise comfort.

Secondly, the hearing instrument(s) must be "programmed". The aids will be connected to a computer into which your test results have been input. The computer will determine how each of the settings on the device should be adjusted to accomodate your individual hearing loss. Modifications to these settings will be made based on tests your hearing healthcare professional may conduct. Remember this process may take several sessions with your hearing healthcare professional before your hearing aids are optimally fine tuned.

Lastly, your hearing healthcare professional will teach you how to use and care for your hearing instruments. He or she will also help you to better understand the process of adjusting to amplified sound.
