A hearing instrument is a significant investment and it is important that
you take the necessary steps to keep it functioning properly. Your hearing healthcare
professional can clean your hearing instrument professionally. But there
are some simple tasks that you can do at home to keep your hearing instrument
working at its best.
Cleaning Your Hearing Instrument
The microphone and receiver are susceptible to debris build-up and should be
cleaned on a regular basis. Your hearing healthcare professional can provide
you with tools and instructions for cleaning your device at home. These
tools include a small brush and a wax loop. Gently brush over the microphone
and receiver to remove any wax or debris. Never immerse your hearing instrument in
water. However, you can wipe the shell with a soft, dry tissue or rag to remove
any debris. If there is debris that cannot be easily removed please
make an appointment with your hearing healthcare professional to have the instrument
cleaned professionally.
Earmoulds
Earmoulds can be detached from a BTE hearing instrument and cleaned in a mild
soap solution. The wax loop tool should be used to remove any wax that may have
entered the earmould tubing. An earmould blower can be purchased for your dispenser
to blow moisture and wax out of the tubing. The earmould and tubing should
be completely dry before reattaching to your hearing instrument. Moisture will
potentially cause damage.
If there is wax in the earmould tubing that cannot be easily removed the
earmould should be taken to your hearing healthcare professional for a tubing
change. Earmould tubing should be changed every 6-12 months. If the earmould
tubing becomes brittle or starts to change color it is time to have the earmould
checked for a tubing change.
Moisture
Moisture can be very damaging to the internal components of a hearing instrument.
If you live in a humid climate, you may want to purchase a dry aid kit. Dry aid
kits are small containers that include a desiccant to absorb moisture. It will
minimise moisture damage and extend the life of your hearing instrument. Please
talk to your hearing healthcare professional about options for purchasing a dry
aid kit.
